‘Very disturbing’: Florida teens get longer prison sentences than adults

Danny Knight was sentenced to 40 years in prison at age 17 for a pharmacy robbery and drug trafficking, a sentence far harsher than what current laws would impose. Florida allows prosecutors to try minors as adults without judicial approval, often resulting in longer sentences for children than adults for similar crimes. Despite disputed evidence and allegations of police misconduct in Knight’s case, he was denied less severe sentencing options. His family has spent years trying to reduce his sentence, but legal changes have not been applied retroactively, leaving Knight to serve his lengthy term.
