Florida’s Corrections Crisis: The Urgent Need for a Criminal Justice Commission

Florida’s prison system is facing a staffing crisis, aging infrastructure, and rising incarceration rates. A 2023 state report found Florida needs $6.2 billion in new construction and $2.2 billion in immediate repairs to keep prisons operational.

Despite a $3.4 billion annual budget, the Department of Corrections struggles with severe staff shortages—58% of officers have less than two years of experience. “That keeps me up at night,” said DOC Secretary Ricky Dixon.

A long-term solution is needed. The Florida Policy Project recommends an independent Criminal Justice Commission to oversee reforms and ensure sustainable planning.
